Cristian Volpato

Cristian Volpato is a professional footballer born on 15 November 2003 in Sydney, Australia, to a family of Italian descent. Raised between two footballing cultures, he represented Italy at youth level before choosing in 2026 to play for Australia, with whom he took part in the World Cup.

Technical characteristics

An attacking midfielder standing 190 cm tall, Volpato stands out for his tactical versatility: he can also be deployed on the right flank or as a central midfielder. A natural left-footer, he combines fine individual technique, vision and an imposing physical frame that allows him to operate effectively in tight spaces. He is a threat both from long range and from set pieces — qualities that, together with a marked strength of character on the pitch, make him a complete and modern player.

Football journey

Volpato took his first steps in the game in Australia, coming through the youth systems of Sydney Utd 58, Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers. In January 2020 he was signed by AS Roma, where he worked his way up through the academy before making his first-team debut under José Mourinho in December 2021, aged just 18. His first Serie A goal came in February 2022 against Verona.

In June 2023 he joined Sassuolo. With the neroverdi he won the 2024-25 Serie B title and promotion, then established himself in Serie A in the 2025-26 season under Fabio Grosso, which ended in a comfortable mid-table finish. He continues his career in the black and green as part of Alberto Aquilani’s project.

National team

After representing Italy at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level — making his Under-21 debut in November 2022 — Volpato completed his switch of sporting nationality to Australia in May 2026. He made his Socceroos debut on 6 June 2026 in a friendly against Switzerland, just days before being named in the squad for the 2026 World Cup. He made three appearances at the tournament, standing out in particular in the knockout tie against Egypt, which Australia lost only on penalties.
